SOUTHERN SKY RECORDING STUDIO UPDATE
Currently, I am finishing editing and cleaning up all audio files at Southern Sky Recording Studio in a project for Tim Bennett, a singer-songwriter from Santa Cruz. Tim is a great writer and I can not wait to share this record with you. This is one of my all-time favorite projects! Tim played acoustic guitar, ukelele, and lead vocals. One of my favorite pieces is a lullaby he wrote for his son. His wife, Angela, who plays piano for the Santa Cruz World Choir & Orchestra sings the harmony on this song. I have to say- their son has a couple of talented parents! As he grows older, I am sure he will learn to appreciate not only their wise counsel, but their musical skill as well. Oh, and did I mention that Tim is also a visual artist? This is one creative family!
Tim’s lyrics are deep, creative, and heart-felt. Melodies are really nice, beautiful backdrop to the lyric content. His voice is infinitely listenable, enjoyable, and dynamic. As a guitar and uke player, Tim knows just what the listener wants to hear. As a producer I do not remember enjoying working with a better, more creative person. I know this music will find its way into a lot of players! His tunes are sure to be featured in a film at some point, so make sure you know and remember his name. Tim Bennett is the real deal!
As usual the musicians on this project are amazing! Sam Kellerman on drums, Dan Robbins on bass, Joe Craven on fiddle, Barry Phillips on cello, Glenn Mac Pherson on guitar, and Stephen Bigger (me) on B3 organ, piano, and accordion.
The studio has really been put through its paces on this record. It was the first full project in the new space. We had to move the whole studio operation last year. Thanks to Tim Prince of Fern Flat Recording for his acoustic design. Tuning the new room was quite a challenge, with a 12 page spreadsheet on measurements, weights, and frequencies. Rhan Wilson did all the construction on the room. What a blessing to be able to work with good friends who are not only talented musicians, but also very knowledgeable in the technical details as well.
